(BaseballStL) – Jake Westbrook has been moved to the DL with lower back stiffness. Speaking Thursday before the game, GM John Mozeliak said the pitcher has been dealing with the issue for several weeks.
Mozeliak also suggested the injury could have contributed to Westbrook’s recent struggles.
He has allowed 28 earned runs in his last five outings on 38 hits.
As for who may start in his place, Mozeliak said it’s undetermined but the candidates all apear to be internal.
“I think trying to get help from the outside right now is going to be difficult for multiple reasons," he said "I think right now, this team is going to have to find a way to do it from within.”
He also said of the players that have cleared waivers, he didn't see any candidates that fit the team's needs.
In house, Monday's starter will come from the stable of young arms that have made starts alread.
“It will depend on usage,” he said Thursday. “Obviously the candidates would be Wacha, Lyons and you have Martinez down in Memphis- so you have options.”
Martinez is no longer in Memphis, as the Cardinals recalled the young righty Friday morning. This will be his fourth trip to the majors. He has posted 16 innings of work for the Cardinals, allowing seven hits and four runs.
His only other start in the bigs was against the Dodgers, a 5-1 loss.
