(BaseballStL) - John Mozeliak is going to be busy over the next few days. He has to find a way to replace an irreplaceable player in Yadier Molina. As a 6-time all-star, and one of the best catchers in the history of the game, Molina is the one player the Cardinals can’t replace without taking a huge hit.
Tony Cruz will have the job for now. Barring a trade, Cruz will have to play every day, something he hasn’t done at any point in his career. Audrey Perez comes up from Memphis to become the back-up.
Just when it looked like the Cardinals line-up was rounding into shape, with perhaps no trade necessary to invigorate the offense, Molina goes down. Mozeliak said the Cardinals will give Cruz an extended opportunity to become the everyday catcher, but at the same time he’ll be looking for a veteran to bolster the position.
A.J Pierzynski of the Red Sox and John Buck of the Mariners were both designated for assignment this week. Both guys would fit the profile as the kind of experienced back stop the Cardinals could use, and not cost the team compensation. Among the possible trade targets would be Kurt Suzuki of the Twins, Ryan Hanigan of the Rays and Carlos Ruiz of the Phillies.
