JUPITER, Fla. - Manager Mike Matheny hinted earlier this week that we might see All-Star catcher Yadier Molina get some innings at first base before leaving to join team Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic. That time arrives Thursday.

Molina will start at first base and bat fifth for the Cardinals Thursday when they host the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium. Molina has 26 career regular season appearances at first base, including one start. He’s won five consecutive Gold Gloves behind the plate.

Matheny said the reasoning was because Molina may play some first base at the WBC to get his bat in the lineup and the Cardinals wanted him to be a little more comfortable there before heading out this weekend.

Matt Carpenter will bat leadoff and play second base while Oscar Taveras will start in center field for the second time this spring. Ty Wigginton makes his first start at third base after playing first base and DH the first five games.

The complete Cardinals lineup:

Matt Carpenter, 2B

Carlos Beltran, RF

Matt Holliday, LF

Allen Craig, DH

Yadier Molina, 1B

Oscar Taveras, CF

Ty Wigginton, 3B

Tony Cruz, C

Ronny Cedeno, SS

-

Jake Westbrook, P

Also scheduled to pitch for the Cardinals Thursday are Trevor Rosenthal, Mitchell Biggs, Randy Choate, Barret Browning, Kevin Siegrist, Keith Butler.
