(BaseballStL) -- After extending his hitless streak to 17 at-bats, the St. Louis Cardinals will rest slumping first baseman Allen Craig for the first game of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.
Craig, who is in search for his first hit since July 24, has struck out nine times over the five game span and seen his batting average dip from .337 to .322, the lowest it has been since July 2.
The absence of Craig from the Game 1 lineup on Tuesday will make way for Matt Adams to make his 33rd start of the season. It will also avoid a matchup of Craig and Game 1 start A.J. Burnett. Craig is 1-for-6 with a strikeout against Burnett.
