(Baseball StL) -- We’re fortunate that so many great former players call St. Louis home after retirement. And the Cardinals Hall Of Famers are a classy bunch. Stan Musial was as humble and approachable as he was great on the field.
My favorite story about Stan comes from about a decade ago. Mike Martz used to invite people to his house after holding his charity golf tournament. There on the back deck of Mike’s house was Whitey Herzog telling stories and Stan Musial playing the harmonica, taking requests.
Peter King, the renown national football columnist, was on the back porch with me listening and enjoying what he was witnessing. He had grown up a huge baseball fan on the east coast. He grabbed my arm and asked me, “is this an everyday occurance in St. Louis? You people really do live in baseball heaven.”
That was what was so great about Stan The Man. He had an everyman quality about him. He was admired by so many for his athletic talent and respected by so many more for his humility.
