(BaseballStL) -- Mark McGwire leaves town having successfully rehabilitated his public image. He was persona non grata in baseball circles for years after his "I'm not here to talk about the past" testimony on Capitol Hill in 2005. But after three seasons as the Cardinals hitting coach, he's proven that he can teach hitting at the major league level.
For many Cardinals fans his departure will be welcome news. Some never got on board with the hire given his steroid admissions. Understandable. But I do give McGwire credit for owning his mistakes publicly and answering the questions thrown at him for months. It allowed him to finally settle into the job and focus on his task.
Remember how much flak Tony LaRussa took when he hired McGwire? Turns out he accomplished both goals he had in mind. He got McGwire back into mainstream baseball and he proved his hunch that McGwire could handle the job.
