(Baseball StL) – In the latest roster tweak, the Cardinals have brought back reliever Marc Rzepczynski from AAA Memphis and optioned Carlos Martinez.
The left-hander has been in Memphis since late April, and at the time had an ERA of 7.88 and a WHIP of 2.00.
In the minors, Rzepczynski’s opponents hit .263 against him as his WHIP dropped to 1.4 and he improved his groundball ratio.
Martinez threw only 3.1 innings in his latest stretch at the big league level, appearing in three games before being optioned again.
With Rzepczynski’s past struggles and rumored sparring with the coaching staff, it’s likely the Cards are bringing the lefty back to showcase him for a deal.
Assuming he carries his AAA improvements over to the big league level, a lefty reliever will be a valuable commodity if the Cardinals decide to make a move.
With a stable of young relievers finding success in the bigs, the Birds have no reason to bring Rzepczynski back from a roster standpoint. If he makes a strong showing in his first appearance, look for Zippy to be heading out of town in a transaction before the end of July.
