(BaseballStL) -- The Kansas City Royals claimed Maikel Cleto through waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
The Cardinals placed Cleto on waivers to make room for Tyler Lyons on the Triple-A Memphis rotation.
Cleto appeared in 13 games for St. Louis, including one game this season, since being acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, which involved Brendan Ryan, prior to the 2011 season. In his only game pitched for the Cardinals this year, he allowed five runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings pitched in a 10-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 5.
He struggled at the big league level while allowing 18 runs in 15.2 total innings pitched for St. Louis since 2011. It has been his only major league experience since being signed as an amateur free agent by the New York Mets in 2006.
The 24-year-old righty appeared in 16 games, including nine starts, for Memphis this season and posted a 2-3 record with a 6.92 earned run average.
