(BaseballStL)--St. Louis Cardinals’ rookie Matt Carpenter is playing first base after Lance Berkman injured his calf and was put on the DL for the season opener.

“It’s exciting; this is what you play for. I have dreamed of getting this opportunity and I am looking to take advantage of it while I’m in there,” Carpenter on his spot in the starting lineup.

Cardinals’ rookie manager, Matt Matheny isn’t disappointed in Carpenter’s placement. “He’s doing a nice job at first base; and he’s a tough out at the plate.”

Carpenter says he plans to do whatever he can to help the club win.

No word on when Berkman will be back in the regular lineup.
