Should Albert Pujols dump his agent?
(BaseballStL) - Albert Pujols needs to change agents. Right now. Like maybe yesterday, if that's possible. The allegations against his agent, Dan Lozano, in a new article on deadspin.com are shocking to say the least. Lozano is described as the "King of Sleeze Mountain".
It's very likely that a rival agent supplied the information for the story. Lozano represents some of the biggest names in baseball. Besides Pujols he has Alex Rodriguez, Joey Votto, Michael Young, Brian Wilson, and Jimmy Rollins. Among the many allegations against Lozano is that he portrayed himself as a church going, God fearing Catholic to get Pujols signed as a client, when in fact he often used prostitutes as a way to entice other clients into his firm. A Lozano co-worker says he often took prospective clients to porn shoots in Los Angeles and dated adult film stars and escorts. Nothing illegal about that, but is that the kind of agent who should be representing Albert Pujols?
The article also describes how Lozano, desperate for cash, wanted to get Pujols signed to a long term contract as early as possible in Pujols' career. That led to the rather surprising 2004 deal between Pujols and the Cardinals that locked up Albert for 8 years at an average salary of 14 1/2 million. One baseball source called it the "best owners contract in baseball". Actually, it didn't seem like a bad deal at the time, but looking back it is surprising that Pujols would have wanted to sign a long term deal that early in his career and delay free agency until he was 31 years old.
According to deadspin.com Lozano has major money problems right now, and that his business is a house of cards waiting to tumble down. He has been waiting for the new Pujols free agent deal to save him from total financial ruin. You have to wonder if Pujols has been aware of all the problems surrounding Lozano and business practices. Albert and his wife Deirdre have no doubt been made aware of the allegations in the article. It'll be very interesting to see how they react to this. It wouldn't surprise me if, in the next day or two, we hear that Pujols had decided to make a change in agents. He needs to. He needs to kick Dan Lozano to the curb as quickly as possible.
