ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have shown interest in acquiring a left-handed reliever and the Cardinals’ Marc Rzepczynski might be a target of interest, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Rzepczynski has started to turn it around following a disappointing first half when he posted a 5.52 ERA. The left-hander has nine-straight scoreless appearances (5.2 innings) this month.
Several reports suggest the Angels may be willing to depart with center fielder Peter Bourjos in a trade for the right reliever. The 25-year-old Illinois native is an above-average defender, but has struggled at the plate. Bourjos hit .230 with three home runs and 19 RBIs in 75 games played this season. He is a career .249 in three seasons at the big league level.
It could be easier for the Cardinals to trade away Rzepczynski with the addition of Brian Fuentes, a left-hander, to the bullpen on Wednesday. The Cardinals also have lefty Barret Browning in the bullpen as well.
The non-waiver trade deadline is set for July 31 at 3 p.m. CT.
