(BaseballStL) -- A rare rainy day in southern Florida caused the Cardinals to alter their practice schedule for Thursday’s Spring Training workout.
The rain began around 8 a.m. local time and didn’t stop for much of the morning, forcing pitchers to do their stretching indoors and throw their bullpens in the covered batting cages nearby.
A group of pitchers needing to play catch in the outfield finally decided to try and brave the elements around 11 a.m. but soon scurried back into the clubhouse when the rain only intensified.
“Today is a day we would love to have these guys on the mound in the sun throwing on a normal situation but you just have to roll with it when it comes,” said manager Mike Matheny. “Guys have to throw. We’re still doing all our bullpens live but we’ll be doing them in the cages.”
Position players were required to report Thursday and some of them waited for the pitchers to finish throwing in the cages before stepping in to take some swings.
The first full-squad workout of the spring is scheduled for Friday.
Weather permitting, of course.
