(BaseballStL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals and first baseman Albert Pujols have only a matter of hours to agree on a new contract before the 31-year-old slugger can become a free agent.

Pujols will likely top the free agent list along with Prince Fielder, David Ortiz and Jose Reyesas free agency begins late Wednesday night.

The nine-time All-Star has hit .328 and 445 home runs in 11 seasons with the Cardinals.

Pujols has stayed mum about the contract negotiations since cutting off talks with Cardinals management in Spring Training.  He also did not speak about where he will sign after the dedication of a statue of him outside his restaurant on Wednesday.

Many league sources believe Pujols will remain a Cardinal, but expect the Cubs, Rangers and possibly the Angels among other teams to make an attempt at signing him.
