(BaseballStL) -- Mike Matheny had big shoes to fill when he took over the defending champion Cardinals last offseason. He was a first-time big league manager who was taking over a team previously led by future Hall of Famers Tony La Russa and Albert Pujols.
It was an anything but consistent season from the Cardinals (88-74) under Matheny in his first year. The team found a way to make it to the NLCS, but failed to advance after jumping out to a 3-1 series lead.
So how do you think Matheny did in his first year?
Here are some responses:
“The only thing he could have done different is the starting lineup but that was still one of the best in baseball.” - Yuri54
“Thought he did great...lost two key assets and still found a way to get them back...even through injuries.” - lmilkowski
“Should be fired after blowing a 3-1 lead.” - Vc
“Barely scrape into the playoffs (by terrible play by others not by winning), great job against the braves (ill give him that game), if Washington had pitched strasburg we don’t make it to the nlcs, up 3-1 in the nlcs and get blown away. Hardly great.” - Realitycheck
“First year of being a manager, especially for a team with 11 World Series titles. He did great, especially since he got to the postseason. Great work! Hope to see even better next year and maybe we’ll get 12 in 13!” - Shay
