(BaseballStL) - Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said at the Winter Warm-Up Saturday he's had discussions recently with former pitcher Chris Carpenter about a role with the team. And Mozeliak says the conversations have reached a point where he's comfortable saying Carpenter is unofficially on board.
"I's need to be dotted and t's need to be crossed but he's excited to do something and we want him to do something," Mozeliak said.
The big question now becomes what exactly will Carpenter do for the team?
"Basically, I'm looking at constructing a job description for him," Mozeliak said. "I do know he's excited to do something within the organization. I can tell you it's not in uniform. He wants to, for the first year or two, get exposure to what happens upstairs (in the front office).
"We're going to try to get a curriculum for him that allows him to get exposure to the different elements of our front office. I welcome that because I've known him a long time and his insights could be invaluable," Mozeliak said.
The Cards GM also says he believes there could be some scouting involved with Carpenter's role. That could be scouting at the Major League level or it could even be at the amateur level in evaluating potential draft picks.
