(BaseballStL) - This weekend the Cardinals learned that starting pitcher Jaime Garcia would have to return to St. Louis for an MRI on his left shoulder, the same shoulder he had operated on a year ago.

Garcia reported pain during the last week.

All the Cardinals will say is he's unlikely to begin the season in the starting rotation but beyond that they are reserving judgment until they get word from their doctors as to what is truly wrong.

"The way we're looking at it right now is it's not a level of disappointment," Mozeliak said. "The key is to find out exactly what's going on with (his shoulder).  Once we understand that, once we understand what the prognosis looks like then we can weigh in on our feelings and understand what the future may hold."

Shoulders can be tricky things.  Former Cardinal Mark Mulder had his career derailed by a shoulder injury during the 2007 season.  So while Mozeliak understands the shoulder is a lot different than an elbow or a knee, he's still holding out hope that this injury won't be that big of a deal.

"There is a level of optimism that he could get some good news from our medical team and, if so, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.  Our hope is that he'll still be a big contributor this year," Mozeliak said.
