(Baseball StL) -- After a lengthy pre-season competition, Shelby Miller stands alone as the fifth Cardinal starter.
The club announced Monday that Miller beat out close friend Joe Kelly for the spot. The young pitcher was overwhelmed by the announcement.
"To be told you're the fifth starter for any team is amazing but to be told you're going to be told you're the fifth starter for the St. Louis Cardinals is a different kind of feeling," Miller said. "I'm speechless."
Miller and Kelly have been battling for the gig all spring training with Kelly getting the first three starts and Miller the last two, including Monday afternoon.
Monday marked the final Grapefruit League game for the fifth starting spot. Following the contest, Manager Mike Matheny officially declared Miller part of the rotatio.
"He's going to get that start," Matheny said. "He's going to be the guy to do that."
There are just four games left before the Cards head to Arizona for the opener and Adam Wainwright, Jaime Garcia, Lance Lynn and Jake Westbrook will pitch those games.
