(BaseballStL) -- Hours before opening a three-game series at home against the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets third baseman David Wright was named National League captain for next month’s Home Run Derby. The New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano was named American League captain.

Wright has blasted eight home runs this season, but only one at Citi Field, which is the home of the Mets and this year’s All-Star festivities. That’s good news for the Cardinals, who entered Tuesday with the best record in baseball at 41-22.

Former Met and current Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran could also participate in the Home Run Derby. Fans have the chance to select three players in each league to participate.

The Cardinals and Mets meet for the first time since St. Louis won three of four at Busch Stadium last month. This series marks the final time this season the teams will meet.
