(BaseballStL) -- Matt Adams continues to be the success story anchoring a cadre of young talent playing exceptionally well for the Cardinals in 2013.

The 24-year-old was drafted in the 23rd round in 2009. He attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, a D-2 school with less than 8,000 students.

Since his days playing for The Rock, Adams as risen through the ranks of the Cardinal organization on his skill at the plate.

In five season in the minors, he hit 82 bombs, notched 293 RBIs and finished with an average of .318 in 369 games.

He got a taste of the bigs in 2012, but the big lefty didn't get a permanent seat with the Cardinals until 2013.

So far in 79 appearances, Adams is hitting at a .269 clip with nine homers. More impressively, his work as a pinch hitter has established him as indispensable to the club.

"The pinch hitting thing is something you never know how a young player will adapt to because none of them really come up through the system as a pinch hitter," said Mike Matheny Monday.

As a pinch hitter, Adams is hitting .343 with three homers and six RBIs. He is second in hits, home runs and RBIs in that situation, despite being 13th in at-bats.

"This guy, he can hit," said Matheny. "You can just tell that he's got a real good idea of his swing."

Adams' plate prowess has earned him 41 starts on the season, and with Beltran sitting Monday to open the series against the Reds, he will get another turn at first base.
