(BaseballSTL) --He hasn't announced anything yet, but we're getting closer. Cards manager Mike Matheny says only one of the two pitchers competing to be the fifth starter - Joe Kelly or Shelby Miller - will stay in Florida while the rest of the team leaves for Arizona on Friday.
That starter, whoever it is, will pitch in a minor league game Saturday to get his pitch count ready for the regular season. The other one will travel with the team on Friday.
Shelby Miller is starting tomorrow in Fort Myers with Joe Kelly pitching in relief. That is the last Grapefruit League available for the fifth starter before camp ends. And with closer Jason Motte now likely headed to the disabled list with an elbow strain, it would appear Miller is a more natural fit in the rotation with Kelly coming out of the bullpen.
But nothing has been made official just yet.
"It's getting a little more obvious. I understand that," Matheny said. "We all put things together but we still haven't made any announcement to these guys. We just want them to keep doing their stuff."
Matheny also says what happened with Motte is a perfect example of how things change in an instant.
"I always have that balance of wanting to tell these guys one thing but also if something drastically changed we could have a radically different look. They deserve to know as soon as they can so their families know what they're going to do but you don't want to be in that situation where you make a statement to somebody and things change. That's tough to swallow."
