(BaseballStL) – After Allen Craig led off the ninth inning with a double, why did Yadier Molina, one of the Cards’ best contact hitters, lay down a sac bunt rather than swing away.

In post game comments Mike Matheny said that the Padres reliever has a great slider and Molina knew it. And it was Molina’s decision to lay down the bunt rather than trying to get a hit.

“That is what he did on his own,” Matheny said of Molina. “It was smart baseball.”

It didn’t feel like smart baseball with a runner stranded at third at the end of the game. Matheny says his team understands the situation.

”They are still aware of the sense of urgency,” said Matheny. “They are still going about it the right way.”

“We just can’t get that break that sends us in the right direction.”
