(BaseballStL) - Joe Kelly has been in this situation before. The Cardinal righthander usually appears to have a shot at starting job, but he usually winds up starting the season in the bullpen.
The Cardinals starting rotation is deep and talented. Adam Wainwright, Shelby Miller, Lance Lynn, Jaime Garcia, Michael Wacha and Kelly are the six pitchers who are vying for five spots in the rotation. Kelly had a starting ERA of 3.03 last season, so he's looking to put in his bid for one of those spots. However, Kelly wasn't used on a regular basis early last season.
"I guess I could have rolled over and said forget about it. I'm not pitching,” said Kelly. “Take some mental days and not worry about anything. I came to the field looking to pitch every day. I stayed mentally prepared. If someone went down, and couldn't get out of the 2nd inning, I was ready."
"It’s tough when you don't know when you're going to pitch, or don't know when to work out, or when to run. So I would say I wasn't at my strongest physically, but I came to the field ready every single day. When I got my chance, I went in there and did whatever I can."
