(BaseballStL) -- Once the everyday leadoff man, center fielder Jon Jay was back in the No. 1 spot on Wednesday.

Jay started the season as the leadoff hitter, but struggled to hit .205 (18-for-88) in 21 starts at the top of the lineup. He was then replaced by All-Star second baseman Matt Carpenter who has propelled the Cardinals offense with a .316 batting average (105-for-332) in 82 starts in the leadoff spot.

With Carpenter scheduled for a rare day off, Jay was inserted back to the top of lineup for Wednesday’s start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Carpenter has played in 101 of 105 games this season for St. Louis.

Carpenter, like the rest of the Cardinals offense, has struggled to hit through the first six games of the current road trip. He is batting .083 (2-for-24) with one walk.

Here is what the rest of Wednesday’s starting lineup looked like:

Jon Jay - CF
Carlos Beltran - RF
Allen Craig - 1B
Matt Holliday - LF
David Freese - 3B
Daniel Descalso - 2B
Tony Cruz - C
Pete Kozma - SS
Adam Wainwright - P
