(Baseball StL) -- Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers may be in the process of establishing himself as the best pitcher the St. Louis area has ever produced. He still has a long way to go, but he’s off to a nice start. Scherzer, from Parkway Central High School, is 10-0 with a 3.08 era and 116 strikeouts this season for the Detroit Tigers. He’s the first pitcher to start a season 10-0 with all decisions coming in starts since Roger Clemens went 11-0 with Toronto in 1997. Scherzer is also the first pitcher to have at least six strikeouts in his first 14 starts since Pedro Martinez in 2001.

Right now, Scherzer would be a leading candidate to win the American League Cy Young award. He’s also on pace to have the best season any starting pitcher from St. Louis has ever had.

Here’s a list of some of the best seasons turned in by starting pitchers who grew up in the St. Louis area:

Ken Holtzman (University City)        1973   21-13   2.97    Oakland A’s

Jerry Reuss (Ritenour)                   1980   18-6     2.51    L.A. Dodgers

Sonny Siebert (Bayless)                 1966   16-8     2.80    Cleveland

Mark Buehrle (Howell North)          2005   16-8      3.12   Chicago White Sox

Siebert threw a no hitter for the Indians during the 1966 season.

Buehrle threw a perfect game for the White Sox in 2009.

It’s debatable as to which of those pitchers had the best single season as a starter. Scherzer has a chance to end the debate if he continues at his current pace this season with the Tigers.

There is no arguing about which St. Louis area product had the best season ever as a Cardinal. That would be Jason Isringhausen of the Cardinals.

Jason Isringhausen (Southwestern) 2004   4-2      2.87    47 saves   St. Louis

Over the course of an entire career Jerry Reuss would have to be considered the best pitcher the St. Louis area has ever produced. Here are some of his career stats that rank him as the best of the local products:

Jerry Reuss (Ritenour)  22 years in the majors

220-191 W/L record

3.53   ERA

1,907 Strikeouts

39 Shutouts

Reuss’ career spanned four decades. He pitched from 1969-1990 with the Cardinals, Astros, Pirates, Dodgers, Reds, Angels, White Sox, Brewers and Pirates again.
