(BaseballStL) -- There are few players in Major League Baseball who are more outspoken against performance enhancing drugs than Cardinals OF Matt Holliday. He constantly is calling for harsher penalties for those found in violation of the league’s rules.
As it turns out, the Cards primary offseason acquisition this winter - Jhonny Peralta - served a suspension this past season for exactly that. General Manager John Mozeliak talked to Holliday before the signing was made official.
“(Mozeliak) called and told me this is what we’re going to do. It’s not like he asked me if it was okay,” Holliday said. “I am against PEDs and I always will be. I’m also a forgiving person. (Peralta) served his suspension and that’s the rules of the game. I’m happy to have him as a teammate.”
Holliday says he wants there to be a level playing field for many reasons but mainly to see how he stacks up against other clean players.
The veteran outfielder also knows, suspension for PEDs or not, Peralta makes the Cardinals a much better team.
“We were looking to upgrade offensively at shortstop and (Peralta) does that for sure,” Holliday said. “He’s a good player. He’s had a long career. You don’t see American League guys a whole lot so I’m interested to get down there (to Florida) and watch him play.”
