ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – The Cardinals were in trouble when their hottest hitter, Carlos Beltran, left Game 3 in the first inning and did not play in Game 4.  The team needed someone to step up and, for at least Game 4, it was Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina.

In the first three games of the National League Championship Series, Holliday was 2-for-12 with no RBI.  That is not acceptable for a guy who is paid to hit moon shots and drive in every runner he sees.  Molina wasn’t much better going 3-for-12.

Then there was Game 4.

Holliday put the Cardinals up early with an RBI single in the first inning and then padded the lead with another one in the fifth inning.  It was his first multi-hit game since Game 3 of the NLDS and his first two RBI of the NLCS.

It should be also noted that he did pop out with a runner on second base and two outs in the sixth inning.

Molina added two RBI of his own on a fifth inning single and double in the seventh inning.  It, too, was his first two RBI recorded in the NLCS.

Could this be a breakthrough for Holliday, Molina and the Cardinals?  Let’s hope.
