JUPITER, Fla. – Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia took another positive step Saturday, tossing 81 pitches and five innings in a 3-0 Spring Training loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Garcia allowed six hits and three runs but had four strikeouts. He has a 3.00 ERA in four starts since leaving Game 2 of the Division Series last fall with a shoulder injury.

“I thought it was a good outing,” said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. “I don’t think his health is a question. I was hoping we cleared that up and I think he has by the way he’s pitched but he’ll just have to keep going out there and hopefully answering those questions by how he pitches. He’s throwing the ball well.

“It’s what we expect from him. Go out there and be the guy that he can be.”

Garcia cruised through the first three innings and struck out four of the first 10 batters he faced before giving up five hits and three runs in the final two frames.

The lefty has two starts remaining before the start of the regular season.
