SAN DIEGO (BaseballStL) – It is almost like night and day for Jaime Garcia when he is at home compared to on the road and Monday’s performance enhanced it.

It didn’t take long for Garcia to find trouble in the first inning when he loaded the bases with only one out but he was able to escape with no harm done after striking out the next two batters to end the inning.  It took 24 pitches (only 11 strikes) to get through the first inning.

The next inning with runners on first and second with no outs, Garcia got a double play off the bat of Padres starter Eric Stults.  The next batter, Chris Denorfia, singled to score the runner from second base.  A double to deep center then scored Denorfia from first base to tie the game.

Through two innings of work, Garcia allowed two runs (both earned), two walks and five hits.

It didn’t get any better for Garcia when he allowed a two-run home run with two outs in the third inning.  He threw 60 pitches through the first three innings.

He was relieved by Shelby Miller in the fourth inning.  Garcia’s final stat line: 3 innings pitched, 7 hits allowed, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts.

The really bad news for the Cardinals is that Garcia’s road ERA this season was 5.80 prior to Monday’s start and the rest of his projected starts this season are on the road.
