(BaseballStL) -- The Redbirds put up a fight in the ninth inning, plating a run.

With runners on first and third, the newest Cardinal, George Kottaras hit into a fielder's choice to score Peter Bourjos from third to make the score 11-2, but it wouldn't be enough as the Brewers held on to win.

The Cardinals gave the run they scored back, as well as one more, in the bottom half of the fourth.

Elian Herrera singled with one out and was sacrificed over to second by Brewers' starter Wily Peralta. Then Carlos Gomez was hit by the pitch and Scooter Gennett made Carlos Martinez pay by blasting a double to left, scoring both runners and giving the Brewers a 4-1 lead.

Then in the fifth, Seth Maness gave up a homer to Khris Davis to push the Brewers lead by another run. The Brewers then hit four more singles, Ryan Braun's scored Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez's scored Scooter Gennett to give the Brewers an 8-1 lead.

They tacked on another run in the seventh inning off of Nick Greenwood. Rickie Weeks was hit by the pitch and then came around to score on a double from Carlos Gomez.

Again in the eighth with Greenwood pitching, the Brewers scored two more runs on three hits.

Kolten Wong and his legs generated a run for the Cardinals in the fourth inning.

After swinging at strike three, the ball shot past catcher Jonathon Lucroy and allowed Wong to reach first safely. Then promptly, on the first pitch thrown to Matt Holliday, Wong swiped second base.

Holliday grounded out to third, allowing Wong to reach third to bring up Matt Adams. Adams also grounded out to third and it allowed Wong to score, pulling the Cardinals within one run.

The Brewers greeted Carlos Martinez with two runs on three straight hits in just the bottom half of the first inning.

Two line drive singles into center from Carlos Gomez and Scooter Gennett put two runners on that scored on a pop fly from Ryan Braun as Matt Adams was boggled on the play.

A fourth straight hit from Aramis Ramirez kept the Brewers in the inning, but Jonathon Lucroy and Khris Davis grounded out to end the inning, limiting the threat at just two runs.
