(BaseballStL) -- David Freese is back in the Cardinals line-up tonight for the game at Milwaukee. He’s been on the bench three of the past four games, while Kolten Wong has taken his playing time.
Wong collected two infield hits in Monday night’s win, and showed why he adds an extra dimension to the attack when he stole two bases.
This Cardinals team desperately needs more speed. They are woefully slow. The Cardinals have stolen only 32 bases as a team. Lou Brock and Vince Coleman use to get that many in a month.
Matt Holliday leads the club with six. It’s clear the Cardinals need Wong’s speed on the bases, and right now that’s coming at Freese’s expense.
Freese and Wong are both in tonight’s line-up against the Brewers. Mike Matheny is giving Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig a rest. Matheny will no doubt continue to juggle his line-up nightly to keep everybody rested, but still sharp for the stretch run.
Freese is saying all the right things while he deals with reduced playing time, and Matheny has noticed. “Hopefully this will all work out and he gets on a tear. But he has handled it as well as anyone possibly could,” Matheny said.
Freese is a total professional, but he’s also human. It has to be bothering him to not see his name in line-up every night.
He responded Monday with a pinch hit double to drive home two and help the Cardinals nail down a victory. Matheny is already seeing positive results from his attempt to light a fire under his third baseman.
