JUPITER, Fla (BaseballSTL) -- He made it clear he didn’t think he’d be able to make it through speaking without choking up and “crying like a baby”. And he was right.
Adam Wainwright, talking for the first time since signing a five year contract worth - reportedly - $97.5 million, broke down multiple times with his family and friends surrounding him.
“I just always hoped this would happen. I feel like my heart is in St. Louis,” Wainwright said. “I love it here. I love driving to the field and seeing the arch. It’s a treat to work there everyday.”
He says the people he sees and interacts with on a daily basis are key to his happiness.
“I’m so proud to be a St. Louis Cardinal. I’m so proud to call these guys my teammates. Some of my best friends in the world are on this team. Some of the reasons why I continue to grow as a man are (on this team),” Wainwright said.
The 31-year old is signed through the 2018 season and cites his history as a reason he wanted to do so.
“In 2011 after we won the World Series, I remember wanting to stand up and say ‘thank you for letting me be a part of the whole experience’. I didn’t get to pitch a single game but I still felt like I was a part of what was going on there because they made me feel loved and embraced me.”
