ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) -- The rotating carousel at the second base position may come to a stop in 2013.

It seems that the Cardinals haven’t really been set at second base since the glory days of Fernando Vina, but that may change if Matt Carpenter can learn to play the position in the offseason.

Manager Mike Matheny told reporters Thursday that Carpenter has been told to work on playing second base this winter.

The move will bring a stronger bat into the lineup and possibly more stability at the position which has seen Daniel Descalso and Skip Schumaker split time at this season.

Carpenter posted a .294 batting average with six home runs and 46 RBI in 296 at-bats this season.  He has played a total of five games, including two starts, at the second base position in his major league career.
