(BaseballStL) -- The Cardinals like to play things very close to the vest when it comes to making official announcements and the immediate future of the starting rotation is no different. With Shelby Miller and Lance Lynn set to pitch the first two games of the upcoming series in Pittsburgh, Sunday’s starter has not yet been announced.
If the team chooses to stay in order that would be the next turn for whomever the fifth starter of the week is. The problem with that is with Tyler Lyons getting optioned to AAA-Memphis this week and Carlos Martinez following suit today, they are not eligible to return in time for that game in Pittsburgh.
However, with the off day on Thursday, that leaves open the possibility of delaying that spot in the rotation for a couple days and bringing Joe Kelly back on short rest. It would appear there are no other options. Yet manager Mike Matheny still insists nothing is official.
“We most likely will stay on track (and go with Kelly) but haven’t confirmed anything,” said Matheny.
If they do go that route, Adam Wainwright could start on regular rest Monday in Cincinnati before needing that fifth starter on Tuesday. Both Martinez, who will start tomorrow in Memphis, and Lyons, who will simply throw a few innings out of the bullpen, are eligible to return that day.
They are candidates to make that next start as is Michael Wacha, although it appears the organization seems content to leave him in the bullpen for the rest of the season.
