(BaseballStL) -- It was a rough night to be an Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher, or even a baseball for that matter, on Thursday night.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Cardinals offense came storming back to score via the home run.

Matt Holliday tied the game in the bottom half of the first inning with a two-run home run, which was followed by an eight-run fourth inning. Five of the eight runs scored came on home runs by Matt Adams and Daniel Descalso.

One inning later, Cardinals starter Shelby Miller joined the home run hitting contest with a solo shot. It was also the first of a back-to-back home run sequence with Matt Carpenter.

The Cardinals pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits, including five home runs, by the end of the fifth inning. Arizona starter Ian Kennedy allowed ten of those runs and 13 hits in four innings pitched.
