(BaseballStL) -- The Cards take on the Miami Marlins Monday afternoon in their first Grapefruit League game of Spring. The first ever lineup written by Mike Matheny:
Skip Schumaker - RF
Jon Jay - CF
Matt Holliday - LF
Carlos Beltran - DH
Yadier Molina - C
Matt Adams - 1B
Tyler Greene - 2B
Daniel Descalso - 3B
Alex Cora - SS
Kyle Lohse will start on the mound with Brandon Dickson, Trevor Rosenthal, Joe Kelly, John Gast among others listed as available to pitch in relief.
A few things to note while looking at the lineup. The fact that shortstop Rafael Furcal, 3rd baseman David Freese and 1st baseman Lance Berkman are not starting is not alarming. You can't play all of your starters each day because A) you'll wear them out and B) you won't have anyone to play the next day or two as it's customary to give guys certain days off.
I do think it's significant that Tyler Greene is getting the start at 2nd here. It's clear that the Cards front office likes him a lot. He's got every tool you could want in a ball player. He just looks like an athlete. The problem has been translating that raw talent into on-field production. This year it's an open competition for 2nd base with Greene, Daniel Descalso and Skip Schumaker all involved. The club knows what it has in Schumaker. He fits mainly as a utility player (OF/IN) who can play 2nd. Descalso might be the most consistent at that spot. You know you'll get a tough at-bat and solid-to-good defensive play. But you won't get a star. Greene has the potential for more.
And he gets the first crack at it today.
