JUPITER, Fla. -- One would think letting pitchers hit at Disney, and the results that came from that decision with Joe Kelly going 3-3, would prompt the Cardinals to want to continue that trend here in Jupiter.
That's not the case.
The Cardinals and Mets came to an understanding today that they would continue to use the DH for a multitude of reasons. New York has a split squad so several regulars are not here and they're stretched thin as it is. The Cardinals had a plan coming in they don't want to deviate too much from.
"What we did was shoot for that off day (on Tuesday) as being kind of from the off day on (we'd let the pitchers hit)," Mike Matheny said.
The reason the Cardinals and Braves let their pitchers hit yesterday in Orlando was because Atlanta likes to get their hurlers work at the plate as much as possible. So the Cards obliged.
But using a DH today means Adam Wainwright won't get to hit.
"Ya, he wasn't happy," Mike Matheny said. "I just told him it wasn't our decision and blamed it on the Mets which isn't altogether true."
Was that any consolation?
"Not much. But he blamed (bench coach Mike) Aldrete I'm good with it," Matheny quipped.
