(BaseballSTL) -- Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny said after Monday’s loss he was sick all day thinking about it, and Tuesday’s compounded the frustration.
Matheny stayed all night at the stadium, choosing to sleep on the couch in his office rather than to drive home.
“For the most part I’ve been pretty fortunate. I get it thought out and then I sleep pretty good,” he said. “But these last couple, there’s a lot of sorting to do.”
Matheny said by the time he was done stewing about Tuesday’s 11-inning loss, it was far too late to drive home.
Unfortunately for the 43-year-old, the comfort of the couch was undermined by the motion sensing lights in his office.
“If I was just smart enough to cover it up,” he chuckled, shaking his head. “But in the middle of night I wasn’t thinking my best.”
It’s hard to blame him for being mentally fatigued. The Cardinals are finishing up a stretch of 20 games in 20 days Wednesday, and have already played 23 innings in first two games of the series with Milwaukee.
