ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – The St. Louis Cardinals have placed left-handed relief pitcher Brian Fuentes on the restricted list after he told the team he needed to step away from baseball because of personal reasons.
Fuentes, signed as a minor league free agent last month, appeared in six games for the Cardinals, totaling five innings pitched.
When asked about his return, Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny says it was "unlikely" due to personal matters.
The Cardinals have subsequently recalled 22-year-old right-handed reliever Trevor Rosenthal from AAA Memphis.
Rosenthal was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in four games with the Cardinals last month after making his major league debut on July 18.
He also made two starts for Memphis following his option on August 1 and struck out 13 batters in 10 innings pitched.
The Cardinals said Rosenthal will be in uniform for Tuesday’s series opener against Arizona.
