(BaseballStL) -- The St. Louis Cardinals activated Jake Westbrook from the 15-day disabled list in time to make his first start since May 8 on Friday.
Westbrook will get the nod in Friday’s series opener against the Miami Marlins for the first time since recovering from elbow inflammation in his throwing arm. He made two rehab starts earlier this month.
He allowed a run on six hits over 3.2 innings pitched with Double-A Springfield and one run and four hits in seven innings pitched with Single-A Peoria during his two rehab stints.
Westbrook posted an NL-leading 1.62 earned-run average in his six starts prior to the injury. He had not allowed an earned run in three of those six starts.
As a result, the Cardinals optioned top pitching prospect Michael Wacha back to Triple-A Memphis. He posted a 1-0 record with a 4.58 ERA in three starts with St. Louis since his call-up on May 30.
