ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) – Lance Berkman may have stepped into the batter’s box for the final time in his Major League career Wednesday night.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Berkman entered the game to a standing ovation as a pinch-hitter with two outs in a scoreless game against Reds pitcher Logan Ondrusek. The at-bat ended with a weak ground ball back to Ondrusek who threw him out at first and ended the inning.
Berkman, who had no chance of beating the throw, trotted all of the way down to first base with his head hung low and appearing to savor the moment. He then walked back to the dugout where his teammates were on the top step applauding along with a sellout crowd at Busch Stadium.
It was his first appearance since September 7. He finishes the season with a .263 batting average with two home runs and seven RBI in 31 games.
