(BaseballStL) -- Adam Wainwright heads to the mound in the midst of contract negotiations which he insists will not bother him as he heads into the final season of his current deal. It was two years ago, right around this time, that Wainwright took to the hill for a live BP session and was absolutely filthy. It was as good as you can look in a setting like that. He was hitting everything. Strikes, balls when he wanted to. Yadier Molina was smiling the entire time because it was so good. The problem was on his second or third to last pitch he felt something in his arm. Turned out he needed Tommy John surgery. That was it for 2011.

This is the first time, since then, that we can realistically expect to see a similar Adam Wainwright on the mound here in Jupiter. It also could play a role in what happens regarding his contract. Who knows, maybe GM John Mozeliak prefers to see his pitcher back in elite form before committing such high dollars to him. Last season, Wainwright got off to a rough start - and that's putting it kindly - with a 7.32 ERA in April before finishing strong in the regular season and playoffs. Will the Cards pay the big bucks assuming he'll continue that trend and be back to dominance in 2013? Or will they prefer to wait and see how he pitches?

Everyone loves Adam Wainwright - but is it a good idea to give the 31-year-old just one year off Tommy John surgery a long term deal? Share your thoughts.

Today's bullpen session is the beginning to what may or may not answer that question. How sharp is he out of the gate? As sharp as he seemed to be during that incredible live throw back in February 2011? Or is he not quite back there yet? All actions cause reactions. They may be small. They may be big. But they still exist.
