-- Mike Matheny is still in a considerable amount of pain after missing the Cards game on Friday in Kissimmee with food poisoning and what he thought was a herniated disc.  Matheny did manage yesterday and is here in Viera today but is not doing well.  The food poisoning isn't an issue, that's long gone, but it turns out the herniated disc is actually a ruptured disc where particles are pushing against a nerve in his back.  They're going to try giving him an epidural shot tomorrow to get the inflammation out along with the swelling.  If that doesn't work, they might have to do some sort of a procedure.  Matheny says his leg gets numb and based on the symptoms the medical staff knew there was something more going on than simply a bulge.  He says he's had problems off and on for a long time - he thinks from catching - and something recently must have set it off.  I asked him if it was from talking to us reporters too much and he said, jokingly (I think), "I'm not ruling it out".

-- Rafael Furcal (elbow) has taken a turn for the worse.  He's stopped all baseball activity after having a setback.  Matheny says Furcal is "not feeling good" and took a "turn in the wrong direction".  There's a chance that there's still a big problem with the ligament in his throwing elbow and the options now are probably more rehab or possibly having surgery.  Matheny says right now Furcal is having pain just standing around.  The majority of the playing time will go to Pete Kozma and Ronny Cedeno (obviously) but isn't ruling out the possibility of someone like Daniel Descalso getting a little bit of time there if necessary.

-- Jaime Garcia will throw around 50-55 pitches today in his second spring training start.

-- Jake Westbrook won't alter his schedule because he didn't throw more than an inning in his first start after getting hit by a liner off his left knee.  Matheny says he got enough work for the first time out and will have a good long throw in between his next start to get the work in that he needs.  He says pushing Westbrook out of his program doesn't make any sense at this point.
