RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Mercer, the 14th-seed in the Midwest Regional, has eliminated third-seed Duke 78-71. Jakob Gollon had 20 points and Daniel Coursey 17 in the biggest win in school history. For Duke, this marks the second time in three years that the Blue Devils were ousted in their first game of the tournament.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Sixth-seed Baylor has advanced in the West Regional with a 74-60 win over Nebraska. The loss means the Cornhuskers have never won an NCAA tournament game. Cory Jefferson scored 16 points for the victorious Bears who have won 11 of their last 13 games.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) — Major League Baseball starts a new season in a matter of hours in Sydney, Australia. The game between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks is slated to begin on a cricket ground at 4 a.m. Eastern time Saturday morning.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers report that reliever Bruce Rondon needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow and that he will miss the entire season. Rondon joins a list of big-league pitcher who will miss the season because of surgery. He'll be replaced in the bullpen by off-season acquisition Joba Chamberlain.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Qualifying for Sunday's Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup race in Fontana, Calif., is taking place this evening. The winner of the race last week was Carl Edwards while the winner of the Fontana race last year was Kyle Busch.
