JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and third baseman Matt Carpenter have agreed to a $52 million, six-year contract. The deal includes a team option for a seventh year in 2020 at $18.5 million. Should the St. Louis decline the option, they would pay Carpenter a $2 million buyout.

DENVER (AP) — Ryan Miller stopped 26 shots, and David Backes broke up a scoreless game in the second period, helping the St. Louis Blues win at the surging Colorado Avalanche 2-1 yesterday. Patrik Berglund added a pivotal insurance goal early in the third period as the Blues won their fourth straight.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jon Ekey hit a 3-pointer in the final second to lift Illinois to a 66-63 victory over Number 24 Iowa last night. Rayvonte Rice scored 15 points to lead the Illini, who notched consecutive road wins against ranked opponents for the first time since 2005. Illinois' Nnanna Egw scored 14 points. Aaron White led the Hawkeyes with 12 points in Iowa City.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Khristian Smith tipped in a missed Justin Gant jumper with 14 seconds remaining to give Number 2 seed Indiana State a 62-59 win over sixth-seeded Southern Illinois in the semifinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament yesterday. Anthony Beane had 16 points for Southern Illinois.
