BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — A 13-year-old Illinois boy is heading to the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1h023P2 ) Alex Wellman of Bloomington won the U.S. Figure Skating sectionals in Michigan last month with a perfect score. He'll compete at the championships in Boston in January.
Wellman is an eighth grader at Bloomington Junior High School. He competes in the juvenile division — the lowest of figure skating's five competitive levels.
Madalyn Brook is Wellman's coach. She says his success is amazing considering he took up competitive skating just three years ago.
Boston is the final qualifying event prior to the selection of skaters who will represent Team USA at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Brook says she and Wellman plan to watch those top skaters compete.
