CHICAGO (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers put right-hander Yovani Gallardo on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained left hamstring.

Gallardo saw team physician Dr. William Raasch in Milwaukee and was diagnosed with a mild strain. Right-hander Tyler Thornburg will take Gallardo's spot in the rotation.

"It was a question whether to put him on the DL," manager Ron Roenicke said. "The thing is he was going to have to miss one start for sure, maybe two, and now you come into your bullpen's going to hurt because we would have Thornburg in his place and now you lose that bullpen guy."

Gallardo first felt pain in the hamstring when he made a diving catch on Carlos Villanueva's bunt in the fourth inning of Milwaukee's 6-5 win in the opener of a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday. Then he started favoring his leg after throwing a pitch with two out in the fifth, forcing him from the game.

The injury is the latest setback in a disappointing season for Gallardo, who is 8-9 with a 4.91 ERA in 23 starts for the last-place Brewers.

Infielder Scooter Gennett, who served as the Brewers' 26th man during Tuesday's doubleheader, was optioned to Triple-A Nashville, and then recalled to take Gallardo's spot on the roster.

Gennett is batting .217 with a homer and five RBIs in 18 games this season with Milwaukee.
