ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Wilson Chebet outpaced Kenyan compatriot Vincent Kipruto in the final kilometer to win the 31st edition of the Rotterdam Marathon on Sunday.
Chebet, who finished second in the Amsterdam marathon last year, crossed the line in 2 hours, 5 minutes and 27 seconds. Chala Dechase of Ethiopia finished third in the 42-kilometer race behind Kipruto.
Kipruto, the 2009 winner of the Paris Marathon, was making his sixth appearance in the Rotterdam race and had been a pre-race favourite, but lost power and pace toward the end.
Debutant Philes Ongori captured the women's race in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 19 seconds.
