ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) -- Is it time to start worrying about Greg Zuerlein? The hot start to the season has definitely gone cold for the rookie kicker after he made his first 13 field goals attempted.
Zuerlein tallied another miss, albeit from 58 yards out, against the 49ers on Sunday and has back-to-back games with at least one missed field goal. (All of this was written before the fourth quarter.)
And as soon as I start to debate whether the rookie kicker has the mental toughness to make it in the NFL, he shuts me up by making a 53-yard field goal to send the game into overtime against the 49ers...and then wins it with a 54-yard field goal.
“Money. I think this entire team has all the confidence in the world in Greg,” Sam Bradford said. “We see him make those everyday at practice. It’s just kind of routine for him. I think we all expected him to make it.”
Although he may have made those field goals, it should be noted that his numbers have struggled since Week 6; he missed three field goals in a 17-14 loss to the Dolphins that week.
He is 8-for-14 in the last seven games, two of which he never attempted a field goal in.
Is Jeff Fisher worried? He told us last week that he wasn’t considering most of the misses have come from long range. In addition, Zuerlein really hasn’t had the opportunity for field goals.
The main reason for the lack of attempts is a result of the Rams needing to go for it more often on fourth down because they have found themselves trailing early.
