(BaseballStL) -- Mike Matheny joked after the Sunday’s game about the two home runs shortstop Jhonny Peralta smashed out against the Pirates.

“We told Jhonny he could go for home runs today.”

But Peralta’s batting line isn’t comical at all. Even with 6 homers, his average is still under .200 and he has the same amount of strike outs as hits. He may be ranked sixth in the NL in home runs, but for a guy making $15.5 million this season he is hitting worse than Kolten Wong who only makes $500,000.

Would the real Jhonny Peralta please stand up?

The Cardinals hadn’t hit a home run since April 16th until Peralta’s two jacks Sunday. Peralta had hit homers in back to back games on April 14th and 15th, but then only scratched out 3 hits over the next 11 games.

“I can’t tell you how many swings he’s had this year where it looks like he’s right on it,” Matheny said in support of his shortstop. He was then impressed with the at-bats Peralta had that resulted in homers, “That was a real good at bat, especially the second one. It was a pretty good pitch and he just stayed with it.”

Fortunately for Peralta, Daniel Descalso is hitting even worse than him with just 3 hits this season. The Cardinals signed Peralta for his offense, not to compete for a starting position with a guy making $1.29 million this season.

The Redbirds gambled by signing a guy coming off of a suspension for PEDs, but they need him to perform better. He has to hit above the Mendoza line. They wanted an upgrade over Pete Kozma and right now Peralta’s .195 average is below Kozma’s April 2013 average of .259 and remember Kozma is currently playing baseball in Memphis.

Regardless, the Cardinals need Sunday’s Peralta in the line-up everyday not the Peralta who’s played the previous 11 games.
