(BaseballStL) -- There was a bit of a surprise on the video board inside the clubhouse of the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon.

One night after collecting a two hits from the two-hole in the batting order, Jon Jay was replaced by Shane Robinson for the second game of the three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.

As much as the extra at-bats would benefit Robinson, who started only 13 games prior to Wednesday, it would also have a confidence boosting effect on Jay, who collect two hits in a 4-1 victory the night before.

Matheny said prior to Wednesday’s game that starting Jay, who has posted only three multi-hit games in July, against the Phillies left-handed starter John Lannan could erase any added confidence from Tuesday.

It’s smart considering Jay has struggled mightily against left-handed pitching posting a .159 average (11-for-69), which is the lowest of any Cardinals starter. The move also allowed Robinson, who posted 66 plate appearances in 60 games played this season, to make his 14th start and the third from the second spot in the order.

Here is the Cardinals’ batting order:

Matt Carpenter - 2B
Shane Robinson - CF
Carlos Beltran - RF
Allen Craig - LF
Yadier Molina - C
David Freese - 3B
Matt Adams - 1B
Pete Kozma - SS
Jake Westbrook - P
